An Obstetrician First, Then a Fetal Medicine Specialist

Most prenatal imaging in India follows a referral chain. A radiologist performs the scan, issues a report and asks the referring doctor to correlate clinically. If something is found, a third doctor handles genetics and a fourth decides what happens to the pregnancy. Dr. Kunda Shahane qualified in obstetrics and gynaecology first, taught it at university level for three years, and only then subspecialised into ultrasound and fetal medicine. She did not arrive at fetal medicine from radiology, and that changes who is in charge of your pregnancy.

A radiologist performs the scan and issues a reportDr. Kunda performs the scan and interprets it as the treating clinician
The sample is sent away; the geneticist's report is forwarded onShe decides which test is indicated and which chromosomes are likely involved, performs the procedure, and explains the result herself
Management is handed back to the referring gynaecologistShe plans and delivers the management, including the maternal conditions driving the risk — thyroid, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac disease, Rh-negative and antibodies

Her Scanning Is Checked Every Year by the Fetal Medicine Foundation, London

An FMF certificate is not a course you attend once. To keep it, a clinician must submit their own ultrasound images to the Fetal Medicine Foundation in London every year. FMF reviews the images against its published measurement standards and renews the certification only if the work meets them.

Dr. Kunda Shahane submits her images annually and holds current certification across the full range of FMF certificates, not only nuchal translucency. In practice this means the measurements behind your risk figure are audited by an independent international body — not simply asserted by the clinic that took them.

  • Nuchal translucency measurement
  • Nasal bone assessment
  • Ductus venosus Doppler
  • Tricuspid flow assessment
  • Uterine artery Doppler
  • Cervical length assessment

Certification held with the Fetal Medicine Foundation, London. Renewal depends on annual image audit.

Procedures She Brought to Central India

Before Dr. Kunda Shahane established Mayflower Clinic, patients in Vidarbha needing these interventions travelled to Mumbai, Pune or Hyderabad. Many went without.

Intrauterine Fetal Blood Transfusion
Transfusing blood into the umbilical vein of a fetus with severe anaemia, most often from Rh incompatibility. Dr. Kunda Shahane was the first in Vidarbha to perform it.
First in Vidarbha
Laser Surgery for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome
Identical twins sharing a placenta can develop unequal blood flow between them. Laser separates the connecting vessels. First offered in Vidarbha by Dr. Kunda Shahane.
First in Vidarbha
Fetal Shunt Procedures
Vesico-amniotic and pleuro-amniotic shunting drains dangerous fluid collections from the fetal bladder or chest before birth, protecting organ development. First performed in Vidarbha by Dr. Kunda Shahane.
First in Vidarbha
FMF-Protocol First Trimester Screening
First in Central India to bring Fetal Medicine Foundation protocol nuchal translucency scanning and first trimester screening to the region, with the annual image audit that certification requires.
First in Central India
A Dedicated Fetal Medicine Practice
Central India's first dedicated fetal medicine specialist. Before Mayflower Clinic, no practice in the region offered fetal medicine as a subspecialty rather than as part of general obstetric imaging.
First in Central India
20,000+ Fetuses Evaluated
Over 20,000 fetuses personally evaluated across NT scans, anomaly scans, fetal echocardiography, neurosonography, invasive testing and fetal therapy.

Academic Leadership

Indian Institute of Fetal Medicine (IIFM), Nagpur

Advanced fetal medicine training in India is concentrated in the metros. Dr. Kunda Shahane founded the Indian Institute of Fetal Medicine at Mayflower Clinic so that doctors practising outside those cities could reach it.

Through IIFM she provides hands-on clinical fellowships and workshops to obstetricians, radiologists and sonologists from across India. Doctors trained there return to their own practices able to offer better fetal assessment to patients in smaller towns and districts — which carries the work well beyond Nagpur.

For patients, IIFM signals something practical: her work is examined by other clinicians, not only performed for them.

How She Works

Every scan I perform is a conversation — between me, the machine, and the family in front of me. My job is to interpret the picture accurately, explain it clearly, and help the family understand what it means for their pregnancy. Medical expertise without clear communication is only half the service. When a parent leaves my clinic genuinely understanding their baby's condition — whether the news is reassuring or difficult — that is when I have done my job.
