Fetal Conditions in Pregnancy

When a scan, screening test or pregnancy history suggests a fetal concern, parents need clarity — not fear. At Mayflower Fetal Medicine & High-Risk Pregnancy Centre, Nagpur, Dr. Kunda Shahane evaluates fetal heart, brain, kidney, growth, fluid, placenta, genetic and twin-pregnancy conditions with specialist counselling.

Why specialist review matters

A fetal finding needs careful interpretation

A report word can sound frightening. But fetal medicine is about understanding the exact finding, confirming it with the right scan, checking associated features, explaining uncertainty and building a practical care pathway.

```
1
Confirm the finding
Some findings need repeat targeted imaging, fetal echo, neurosonography, Doppler or serial follow-up before conclusions are made.
2
Look for associations
Fetal medicine checks whether the finding is isolated or associated with chromosomal, genetic, placental or multisystem concerns.
3
Guide next steps
Parents receive clear counselling about monitoring, testing options, prognosis, delivery planning and postnatal referral when needed.
Condition categories
Find the fetal condition or scan concern
Select the category closest to your report finding. These pages are for education and appointment guidance; your own pregnancy needs specialist review.
Care pathway
What happens after a fetal condition is suspected?
The aim is to move from anxiety to a structured plan. Each pregnancy is reviewed individually.
Review reports
Previous scans, screening tests, NIPT, blood reports and referral notes are reviewed.
Targeted scan
Anomaly scan, fetal echo, neurosonography, Doppler or genetic sonogram may be advised.
Counselling
Parents are counselled about the finding, uncertainty, testing options and likely follow-up.
Follow-up plan
A plan is coordinated with the treating obstetrician and relevant specialists when needed.
Frequently asked questions
Fetal Conditions FAQs
What should I do if my anomaly scan shows a fetal abnormality?
Do not panic. Book a fetal medicine consultation with your full report and previous scans. A targeted scan, fetal echo, neurosonography, Doppler, genetic counselling or follow-up plan may be advised depending on the finding.
Does every fetal condition mean a serious outcome?
No. Some findings are mild, isolated or need only monitoring. Others require further testing or multidisciplinary planning. Prognosis depends on the exact condition, severity, associated findings and gestational age.
Can fetal medicine replace my regular obstetrician?
No. Fetal medicine works alongside your treating obstetrician. Dr. Kunda provides specialist diagnosis, counselling and surveillance planning while your obstetrician continues routine pregnancy care and delivery planning.
Will I need genetic testing?
Not always. Genetic testing is advised only when the scan finding, screening result, family history or previous pregnancy history suggests that it may help clarify diagnosis or counselling.
Can fetal conditions be treated before birth?
Some conditions can be monitored only, some need delivery and newborn planning, and selected conditions may benefit from fetal therapy or intervention. The decision is individualised after specialist review.
Can fetal sex be disclosed during evaluation of fetal conditions?
No. Mayflower Fetal Medicine & High-Risk Pregnancy Centre strictly follows the PCPNDT Act. Determination and disclosure of fetal sex is prohibited by law and is not performed.
