When Dr. Kunda Shahane established Mayflower Fetal Medicine Centre in Nagpur, advanced fetal medicine services did not exist in Central India. Patients requiring specialist fetal assessment — NT scans by FMF protocol, fetal echocardiography, invasive genetic testing, or fetal therapy — had to travel to Mumbai, Pune, or Hyderabad. Many simply went without.
Dr. Shahane changed that. She was the first specialist in this region to perform intrauterine fetal blood transfusion, fetal shunt procedures, and laser surgery for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome — life-saving interventions that previously required patients to leave Central India entirely. She introduced FMF-standard NT scanning and first trimester screening, applying protocols used in leading centres worldwide to patients in Nagpur.

Recognising that advanced fetal medicine training was largely inaccessible to doctors practising outside major metros, Dr. Kunda Shahane founded the Indian Institute of Fetal Medicine (IIFM) at Mayflower Clinic — the only dedicated fetal medicine training institution in Central India.
Through IIFM, Dr. Shahane provides hands-on clinical fellowships and specialised workshops to obstetricians, radiologists, and sonologists from across India. Doctors trained through IIFM return to their own practices with the skills to provide better fetal assessment to patients in smaller towns and districts across Central India — multiplying the impact of specialist training far beyond Nagpur.

Patient Philosophy
Every scan I perform is a conversation — between me, the technology, and the family in front of me. The GE Voluson Signature Expert gives me the clearest possible picture of the baby. My job is to interpret that picture accurately, explain it clearly, and help the family understand what it means for their pregnancy. Medical expertise without clear communication is only half the service. When a parent leaves my clinic truly understanding their baby's status — whether reassuring or concerning — that is when I feel I have done my job well.
