Modern fetal medicine can diagnose — and in many cases treat — conditions while your baby is still in the womb. At Mayflower, every procedure is performed by the specialist who first brought fetal therapy to Vidarbha.
Every procedure at Mayflower belongs to one of two families. Understanding the difference helps you understand why your doctor has referred you — and what to expect.
When screening raises a question, diagnostic procedures provide a definitive answer — sampling amniotic fluid, placental tissue, or fetal blood for chromosomal and genetic analysis. A few minutes of procedure; a lifetime of clarity.
When a treatable condition is found, fetal therapy intervenes — transfusing blood to an anaemic baby, draining excess fluid, placing shunts to protect developing organs. Treatment delivered to a patient who hasn't been born yet.
All diagnostic procedures are performed under continuous real-time ultrasound guidance — Dr. Kunda sees the needle on screen at every moment.
A small sample of amniotic fluid for definitive chromosomal diagnosis — karyotype, microarray, rapid FISH. The gold standard confirmation test after a high-risk screening result.
A tiny biopsy of placental tissue — the same genetic tests as amniocentesis, but available in the first trimester, allowing earlier answers and earlier decisions.
Sampling the baby's own blood from the umbilical cord — for rapid karyotype (48–72 hours), fetal anaemia diagnosis, and fetal infection testing. A technically demanding procedure requiring specialist skill.
After a pregnancy loss, a careful, respectful examination can identify the cause — providing answers for grieving families and vital information for planning the next pregnancy.
These procedures were unavailable in Vidarbha before Dr. Kunda Shahane introduced them. Families who once travelled to Mumbai or Delhi now receive this care in Nagpur.
When a baby develops severe anaemia in the womb — from Rh disease or infection — blood is transfused directly to the baby through the umbilical cord. A life-saving procedure, performed first in this region at Mayflower.
When there is too much amniotic fluid — causing maternal distress and preterm labour risk — excess fluid is drained under ultrasound guidance, providing relief and protecting the pregnancy.
The opposite problem — too little fluid. Sterile fluid is infused into the amniotic sac to improve scan visibility for diagnosis and reduce cord compression risk.
A tiny drainage tube placed inside the womb — relieving pressure from a blocked fetal bladder (vesico-amniotic shunt) or fluid around the lungs (pleuro-amniotic shunt), protecting organ development before birth.
Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome — when one twin donates blood to the other through shared placental vessels. Staging, surveillance, amnioreduction, and laser treatment coordination at Mayflower.
An enlarged fetal thyroid can compress the baby's airway. Specialist diagnosis, in-utero treatment, and delivery planning — a rare condition managed with rare expertise.
Photograph your referral note or scan report and send it to +91-8087471244. Our team will confirm the procedure needed and offer the earliest suitable appointment — urgent referrals are prioritised.
Before any procedure, Dr. Kunda reviews your full history and scans, explains exactly what will happen, discusses risks and benefits honestly, and answers every question. Nothing happens until you are ready.
Most procedures are quick, performed under continuous ultrasound guidance with sterile technique. Your comfort is monitored throughout, and Dr. Kunda explains each step as it happens.
You receive clear aftercare instructions and a timeline for results. A complete report is sent to your referring obstetrician, and Dr. Kunda personally counsels you when results arrive.
"When I began practising fetal medicine, families in Vidarbha had to board a train to Mumbai for procedures that take fifteen minutes. A mother with a severely anaemic baby cannot afford that journey — not in time, not in money, not in hope. Bringing fetal therapy to Nagpur was never about being first. It was about making sure no family here is ever told 'this cannot be done in your city' again."— Dr. Kunda Shahane, MBBS, MS (Obs & Gynae), FIFM, FMF (London)
Send your referral note on WhatsApp — urgent cases are seen on priority. Dr. Kunda will personally review your reports before your visit.
