MRI after fetal ultrasound when needed

Fetal MRI Counselling / Referral in Nagpur

Fetal MRI is not a replacement for ultrasound. It is an additional imaging tool used when ultrasound raises a question that MRI may answer better — especially in selected fetal brain, spine, chest, abdominal, placental or complex anomaly cases.

The right question is not “MRI for everyone?” It is “Will MRI answer something important that ultrasound cannot answer fully?”
When MRI helps

Common fetal MRI counselling indications

Fetal brain and spine

Ventriculomegaly, corpus callosum concern, posterior fossa anomaly, cortical development concern, spinal anomaly or complex CNS findings.

Chest and abdomen

CPAM/lung lesion, diaphragmatic hernia, abdominal cyst, bowel concern, mass lesion or unclear organ relationship.

Placenta and complex cases

Placenta accreta spectrum concern or complex anatomy where MRI may help obstetric, neonatal or surgical planning.

Ultrasound vs fetal MRI

QuestionUltrasound roleMRI role
First-line fetal assessmentUltrasound is the first-line test for fetal anatomy, growth, Doppler and fluid.MRI is not usually first-line; it is added when a specific question remains.
Fetal brain detailNeurosonography evaluates ventricles, midline, posterior fossa and brain anatomy.MRI may add information about cortical development, posterior fossa or complex CNS anatomy.
Thoracic lesionUltrasound assesses lesion size, mediastinal shift, hydrops and blood supply.MRI may help define lung volumes and relationship to chest structures in selected cases.
Placenta accreta concernUltrasound and Doppler are primary tools for placental invasion suspicion.MRI may be added for posterior placenta or complex surgical planning.
Genetic diagnosisUltrasound can suggest structural patterns but cannot give chromosome results.MRI does not replace genetic testing such as amniocentesis, microarray or targeted tests.

Important limitation

Fetal MRI is an adjunct. It does not replace ultrasound, Doppler, fetal echo, genetic counselling or invasive testing when those are medically indicated.

How Mayflower helps before MRI referral

Dr. Kunda reviews the ultrasound diagnosis, identifies the exact clinical question for MRI, explains what MRI can and cannot answer, helps choose timing, and integrates the MRI report back into fetal counselling and delivery planning.

FAQs

Fetal MRI counselling FAQs

Is fetal MRI safe?

MRI does not use ionizing radiation. It is used prudently in pregnancy when it is expected to answer a relevant clinical question.

Does fetal MRI replace anomaly scan?

No. Ultrasound remains the first-line fetal imaging test. MRI is added only for selected questions after ultrasound.

Will MRI tell whether the baby has a genetic problem?

No. MRI shows anatomy. Genetic diagnosis may need counselling and tests such as CVS, amniocentesis, microarray or targeted genetic testing.
